Dog seat belts: how to choose and use one

A dog seat belt is a short tether: one end clicks into the car's seat belt buckle, the other clips to your dog's harness. It keeps your dog on the seat, out of the footwell and away from the driver.

OptionBest for
Adjustable dog seat beltSetting the exact tether length for your dog and seat
Nylon pet seat beltA simple, light everyday tether
Bungee leash with car seat buckleOne piece of gear for the car and the walk at the stop
Car safety leashTravel days that switch between car and leash often

How to set it up

  1. Put a well-fitted harness on your dog — never clip a tether to a collar.
  2. Click the tether into a rear seat belt buckle.
  3. Adjust the length so your dog can sit and lie down but cannot reach the front seats or the footwell.

These products keep your dog in place; they are not crash-tested restraints.

Dog seat belt FAQ

Do dog seat belts work?

A seat belt tether keeps a dog on the seat and away from the driver, which helps on everyday drives. Ours are not crash-tested restraints, so they limit movement rather than protect in a crash.

Should a dog seat belt go on a collar or harness?

Always a harness. Clipping a tether to a collar puts sudden braking force on the neck.

How long should a dog seat belt be?

Long enough for your dog to sit and lie down, short enough that they cannot reach the front seats or fall into the footwell.
