Quick answer: Most dogs do not need a hoodie, but small, short-coated, very young, senior or lean dogs often benefit once temperatures drop below about 45°F (7°C). Fit matters more than style: measure back length, chest and neck, choose the size that matches the chest, and remove the hoodie if your dog overheats.

Which dogs actually get cold?
Body size, coat type and body fat decide how quickly a dog loses heat. A husky with a dense double coat is built for snow; a Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound or freshly groomed Yorkie is not. Age matters too: puppies and older dogs regulate temperature less well. If you are unsure about a dog with a health condition, ask your vet — that advice beats any chart.
| Air temperature (feels like) | Small or short-coated dogs | Medium dogs, normal coat | Thick double-coated breeds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Above 50°F / 10°C | Usually fine without a layer | Fine | Fine |
| 45–50°F / 7–10°C | A light hoodie can help on longer walks | Usually fine | Fine |
| 32–45°F / 0–7°C | Hoodie or sweater recommended; watch for shivering | Consider a layer if lean or senior | Usually fine |
| Below 32°F / 0°C | Layer up, keep walks short, protect paws | Layer recommended, shorter walks | Watch paws and ice |
| Below 20°F / −7°C | Brief potty breaks only | Short walks only | Limit time outside |
Signs your dog is cold
- Shivering or trembling, especially when standing still
- Holding up paws, tucking the tail, or hunching the back
- Slowing down, or trying to turn back home
- Looking for warm spots or burrowing under blankets once indoors
How to measure for a dog hoodie
- Back length: from the base of the neck (where a collar sits) to the base of the tail.
- Chest girth: around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs. This is the measurement that decides the size.
- Neck: around the base of the neck. Keep two fingers of room.
- Compare with the size chart on the hoodie product page. Between two sizes? Pick the larger chest size for comfort; very slim dogs may be better in the smaller one.

Hoodie, sweater or coat?
| Layer | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Fleece hoodie | Cool, dry days; city walks; indoor warmth for small dogs | Not waterproof; take off in heated rooms |
| Knit sweater | Mild cold, lounging | Snags on brush, absorbs rain |
| Insulated / waterproof coat | Rain, wet snow, wind | Bulkier; check it does not rub under the front legs |
Fit check before the first walk
- Your dog can sit, lie down and walk normally without the hem pulling.
- You can slide two fingers under the neck and chest.
- The belly is clear for males so the hoodie stays clean.
- If you use a harness, decide whether it goes over the hoodie (easiest) or under it (only if the fabric has a leash opening). A harness over a hoodie should still pass the two-finger test — see our tactical harness size chart.
Washing and care
Wash fleece on a cool, gentle cycle inside out and air-dry; high heat can shrink and pill fleece. Brush off hair before washing so it does not clog the fabric. Check seams after a few washes, especially under the front legs.
FAQ
Should dogs wear hoodies indoors?
Usually not. Indoors most dogs are warm enough, and a hoodie can make them overheat. Exceptions are very small, hairless or elderly dogs in cold homes — take it off if they pant or seem restless.
Is it cruel to put clothes on a dog?
Not if the garment fits, the dog is comfortable and it serves a purpose such as warmth. Introduce it gradually with treats and remove it if your dog freezes, scratches at it or tries to back out.
What size hoodie does my dog need?
Choose by chest girth first, then check back length. Our pet hoodie comes in S–2XL; compare your measurements with the chart on the product page.
Can my dog wear a harness over a hoodie?
Yes. That is the simplest setup. Re-adjust the harness so it still fits snugly with two fingers of room, because the fabric adds bulk.
How long can a small dog walk in cold weather?
It depends on the dog, wind and wet conditions. Below freezing, keep walks short for small or short-coated dogs and watch for shivering or lifted paws. Ask your vet for dogs with health issues.
